KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Back-to-school shopping can take a toll on any family’s budget, but over the weekend, the “Hairmanity” event in Kansas City made sure local kids head to class looking and feeling their best at no cost.

“The purpose of Hairmanity is to reinstall confidence into people who feel underserved and restore that feeling that they’re loved and cared for,” Co-founder Christina White said.

“When you look good, you feel good, so when your hair is done, you got a new outfit, of course, you feel your best.”

Co-founders Christina White and Myka McGowan launched the back-to-school event in 2024, inspired by a need they saw in the community.

For its second year, it’s even bigger, offering free clothes, shoes, hairstyling, and even face painting for the kids.

“Even with my little clients, their faces light up. They’re like, ‘Oh my God, can’t stay out the mirror,’” Co-founder Myka McGowan said.

“I think it gives them a confidence thing too, so like if they go to school, you know, kids sometimes bully. So, we want to send them back looking good.”

For parents, especially with multiple kids,  the savings mean one less thing off their plate during the busy season.

“With everything going up with the food and now the clothes as well, and the shoes are expensive too,” mom Jay Fuller said.

“Cause she’s getting older so this is a big help. This is going to go a long way, and I appreciate that they advertised it.”

The founders say they plan to continue growing the Hairmanity event to reach even more families in the years to come.
