A round of storms is expected to form Monday afternoon in Oklahoma, bringing some relief to the usual 90-plus degree August heat.

The biggest chance of storms will be along and northwest of Interstate 44 during the afternoon and evening hours, according to the National Weather Service in Norman.

Here's what to expect over the next few days.

Flood watch issued in Oklahoma on Monday

The NWS issued a flood watch on Monday, Aug. 11, in advance of showers and a chance of scattered severe storms that will roll through Oklahoma.

A large swath of the state, from Enid and Ponca City in the north to Ardmore and Lawton in the south, are under a flood watch until the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 12.

The area is under a "slight" risk of excessive rainfall that could lead to flash flooding in some places. The highest chance for storm formation in Oklahoma City will be on Monday afternoon and evening.

Most areas that see rain will get between 1 to 2 inches, but the NWS said the worst-hit parts of the state could end up with up to 4 inches of rain. The strongest storms will be capable of gusty winds and heavy rainfall with localized flooding. If hail forms, it could be as big as golf balls.

Through Wednesday, Aug. 13, a smaller chance of showers and storms remain further south of Oklahoma City. According to the NWS, temperatures will be on the "cooler side" with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s.

Hot weather returns late in the week

Most of Oklahoma will remain below 90 degrees on Tuesday but will quickly rise back to seasonal averages in the mid-to-upper 90s.

After the storm system completely moves out of Oklahoma mid-week, forecasters expect hot weather to come back. Low temperatures at night will only get to the mid-70s.

Some variations in the weather could lead to isolated storms this weekend, but chances are very low at about 10% to 20%.
