CONNECTICUT (WTNH) — Four nonnative exotic tick species have been identified in Connecticut in recent years, according to reporting from the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES).
Invasive ticks spread across more Connecticut counties
The CAES believes that the ticks are hitching a ride on unknowing travelers returning to the state. The ticks may not be considered an immediate public health threat because of “extremely limited numbers” found on international travelers.
“People should also conduct thorough tick checks while traveling, particularly following outdoor activity in potentially tick-infested areas, and be proactive in monitoring possible symptoms following a tick bite,” Dr. Goudarz Molaei, director of the CAES Passive Tick and Tick-Borne Disease Surveillance Program, said.
Experts believe that the ticks came from Guatemala, Costa Rica, Belize, Tanzania, Germany, Poland and Scotland and came here during the years 2019 to 2023.
