CNN anchor Dana Bash rebuked President Trump on Monday after the president announced he was taking control of the Washington, D.C., police department and would deploy the National Guard to crack down on crime in the District.
“Just before we take a break, I want to note that the most violent moment in recent history in D.C. was Jan. 6,” Bash said on her daily “Inside Politics” program on the network. “And it was an attack on the United States Capitol by a lot of people who were doing it in the name of Donald Trump.”
Bash went on to say her comments were in reference to “the people who were hurt, and included members of law enforcement.”

The anchor’s comments came just minutes after Trump held a wide-ranging press conference at the White House, during which he blasted local leaders in the District and vowed to crack down on what he said was out-of-control violent crime and squalor in the nation’s capital.
The president’s actions have drawn widespread rebuke from Democrats and D.C. officials, who argue crime is down in the District and blasted the president for acting outside his authority.
Crime in D.C. was down 35 percent in 2024 from the previous year, marking a 30-year low. Data from the District shows violent crime is also down so far in 2025 compared with the previous year.
