The odds were against this Genesis sedan from the start
The Genesis G70 is one of the most enjoyable compact luxury sedans on the market, and it’s easier to think of reasons you should buy one than why you shouldn’t. Unfortunately, despite still being in its first generation, it looks like the G70 may not survive beyond that. This is the prediction made by industry analysts, but it has nothing to do with the capabilities of the sedan. Rather, it finds itself in a tough segment where brand prestige is often vital to succeed.
G70 Is A Poor Business Case

The G70 has always been up against two major hurdles. One, its direct rivals have a loyal fanbase and superior brand recognition, factors which are still highly valued in the luxury segment. Secondly, the G70 was launched at a time when SUVs had already eaten into the market share of sedans significantly. Last year, the brand sold over double the number of GV70 SUVs as it did G70 sedans.
"The volume and its relatively low price do not provide a good business case for continuing the [G70],” said Sam Fiorani, VP global vehicle forecasting for AutoForecast Solutions, when speaking to Automotive News. "The G70 requires unique engineering such as a high-performance longitudinally-mounted four-cylinder in order to keep up with BMW and Mercedes-Benz.”
Ironically, it’s precisely the longitudinally-mounted engines and rear-wheel-drive setup that have endeared the G70 to many. It’s a proper sports sedan, especially when equipped with the 365-horsepower twin-turbo V6 engine.
2027 Could Be The G70’s Last Model Year

Analysts predict that the G70 will be gone after the 2027 model year, which suggests that the sedan will only stick around for about two more years. If so, the G70 would follow the same fate as the Kia Stinger, another great sports sedan from Korea that suffered from declining sales.
Earlier this year, a report from Car and Driver suggested that the possible discontinuation of the G70 would form part of the brand’s decision to move even further upmarket, in pursuit of higher margins. Already, we know a large GV90 SUV is in the works, which will target the three-row BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class.

The G70’s uncertain future follows the recent demise of the G80 Electrified, another sedan that failed to resonate with buyers; only 77 of them were sold in the first half of 2025.
Increasingly, non-German luxury car brands are moving towards an SUV-only lineup. Buick has already done just that and Acura is one model away from the same happening, following the announcement that the TLX would go out of production.
Genesis may find itself in a similar situation soon, and what a pity that would be, given the strength of the company’s sedan range.
