Uprated Four-Motor Powertrain Disclosed

New details on the Yangwang U9 Track Edition, a new variant of the U9 electric supercar from BYD's Yangwang brand, have been revealed by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). And they point to one of the most powerful EVs to date.

According to CarNewsChina, the filing confirms an uprated four-motor powertrain, with one motor powering each wheel. But instead of the standard U9's 1,287 horsepower, the Track Edition will have 2,977 hp. The filing did not say when this more-powerful would launch, however.

That output surpasses both the Lotus Evija (1,972 hp) and Rimac Nevera (1,914 hp), giving BYD bragging rights among electric supercars. The "Track Edition" billing hints at similar prowess to the European supercars outside of straight-line-acceleration, although here the details are thinner.

The filing confirms that the Track Edition will have some additional aerodynamic aids, including a carbon fiber rear wing and diffuser, while a carbon fiber front splitter and electronically-adjustable rear wing will be optional. The roof is made from carbon fiber as well but, not surprisingly for an EV, the Track Edition still has a quoted curb weight of 5,467 pounds.

The standard U9, which launched in 2024 as the second Yangwang model (the first was the U8 SUV) already has one of the most sophisticated suspension systems in production. BYD's DiSus active suspension allows the U9 to—according to promotional video's at least—drive on three wheels and even hop like a lowrider.

Performance Benchmarks

The filing quotes a top speed of 217 mph for the Track Edition, but there may be more performance potential on tap. According to CarNews China, BYD recorded a top speed of 243 mph with the standard U9 in 2024, setting a record for a production Chinese car. The Up also managed a 7:17.9 lap at the Nürburgring Nordschliefe.

In China, the standard U9 costs the equivalent of $231,000, which makes it a relative bargain compared to the Evija, Nevera, and the most powerful gasoline European supercars. The Track Edition will likely cost more, although exactly how much remains to be seen.

BYD has regularly traded places with Tesla as the top global EV seller, and remains a major player in its home market despite increased competition from other Chinese brands. It's also made a big push into Europe led by affordable EVs like the Seagull, a compact hatchback that's on the opposite end of the spectrum from the U9.
