The Farmer's Almanac published its 2025-2026 winter weather forecast for the U.S., predicting "a season of dramatic swings and widespread wintry weather."
For those who are sick and tired of the heat domes this summer, this may be good news. But for others who hate the yearly drop in temperatures and onslaught of snow, the forecast may be daunting.

Illinois forecast to face cold, snowy winter season
Though winter doesn't officially begin until the winter solstice on December 21, the Farmer's Almanac is already predicting a chilly, snowy season for much of the country. The 209th edition of the almanac forecasts "Chill, Snow, Repeat" weather patterns for the upcoming 2025-2026 winter season.
The almanac predicts chilly, breezy temperatures over the December holidays, with significant cold snaps in mid-January and mid-February. Regarding snow, Illinois and surrounding states are expected to see a "classic winter wonderland."

Farmers' Almanac Editor Sandi Duncan told USA TODAY that the Midwest region will get cold temperatures "perhaps blowing down from the north, especially in Indiana and northern Michigan."
Duncan said the Great Lakes region will see a "pretty big snowstorm" from February 8-11, with the snow giving way to very cold temperatures.
"The beginning of March brings snow to most of the region," Duncan said. "The month ends with brisk, windy conditions, plus snow in the north."
Overall, the almanac predicts a "very cold, snowy" winter season for Illinois, so it's best to start hunting for winter jackets now.
