DELTONA, Fla. (WJW) – A 14-year-old Florida boy is being hospitalized after he was hit by a car on the first day of school while riding his bike in Deltona.
According to a press release from the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, the 14-year-old boy was riding his e-bike to school on the sidewalk of Howland Boulevard when he approached Roble Lane. When the victim was crossing the crosswalk, the driver of a Kia Soul entered the crosswalk at a low speed, attempting to turn onto Howland Boulevard.

According to the release, the vehicle dragged the boy about 15 feet before coming to a stop with the boy trapped underneath.
Witnesses, including a passing tow truck driver, stopped to help the boy. They were able to lift the vehicle and move the victim to safety, the release said.
Deputies arrived at the scene around 9 a.m., the release said. Although the boy was injured, he was still conscious at the scene. He was also wearing a helmet.
The victim was taken by Air One to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando.

“At last check, he was in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery,” the release said.
The Volusia Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of bike and vehicle safety on the roads and sidewalks.
