MOUNT STERLING, Ky. (FOX 56) — As students at Montgomery County High School and McNabb Middle School began the school year, they had to wait through security when they walked in.
School leaders installed the Xonar weapons detection system to enhance campus safety.
LATEST KENTUCKY NEWS:
Montgomery County Schools Chief of Police Chris Barrier said it’s different from a standard metal detector, as it focuses on all different types of objects and weaponry specifically.
“It identifies the things that might be harmful objects, such as weapons, and that kind of thing. And that’s what helps to make the system so smooth, is the speed at which we can move students through the system,” he explained. “It will identify the weapons or the items of concern, and it alerts the teacher.”
Barrier said for several years, school leaders have been working to increase security operations.
“We’re leveling up safety and security in our school, not only to keep students safe, but staff as well. So we’ve spent an incredible amount of money and resources in that. But when school safety is your top priority in your district, then the price tag doesn’t matter,” he added.
LATEST KENTUCKY LISTS AND RANKINGS:
While the first day might come with a few hiccups, Barrier said the new system operates smoothly, not impacting wait times to get inside the building. He said they are also working to see if they can implement them at school events, including sports.
