  • Built to show the possibilities of customization, these two Broncos have a theme inspired by the dunes of Lake Michigan.

  • Most of the modifications are straight out of the Ford Performance catalog.

  • Either of the pair would be perfect for catching the last rays of summer on a day that ends in a glorious sunset over the lake.

Before Ford resurrected the Bronco in 2020, you have to imagine some of the Blue Oval's designers looking over at Jeep with envy. Why do those folks get to have all the fun with their special editions and Easter eggs and heritage packages? Well, no more. Now for Broncos big and fun-size (Bronco Sport), there's a whole new sandbox to play in.

Here's the latest pair of one-off Broncos, straight from the shores of Lake Michigan. Specifically inspired by the dunes of the area, the pair is called the Bronco Silver Lake Dunes, featuring customization set up for a lakeside summer in the sand.

These aren't special editions to be found in showrooms, but rather projects that a Bronco or Bronco Sport owner could re-create by thumbing through the Ford Performance catalog. The bull bars are the same as the stock unit on the Bronco Sport Badlands, and the light bars and Yakima paddleboard carriers are also straight out of the catalog.

The big Bronco is a four door model and wears chunky BFGoodrich T/A KO3 tires on a black-painted version of Ford's Heritage wheels. The Bronco Sport Silver Lake Dunes is running the rally-style wheels from the Mach-E with some lighter-duty tires, and it looks absolutely aces. Ford should slap a set of these on the Maverick too.

The two tone sunset-on-the-lake graphics are custom, as is the badging, but any signmaker worth their salt could print up something similar. Having said that, the Bronco and Bronco Sport Silver Lake Dunes aren't really intended to drive imitation, but showcase the level of customization that's available, and inspire owners to personalize their rig.

Jeep Wrangler folks do this all the time, from the rugged (rock sliders and external roll cages) to the questionable (all those angry-looking grilles) to the slightly weird (dozens of ducks glued to the dashboard). It's now easy to get in on the fun if you're more of a FoMoCo fan than a Mopar person. But skip the frowny-face mods. Part of the charm of both sizes of Bronco is that they're friendly-looking.

As part of the Bronco's 60th birthday celebrations, this pair of project SUVs looks like they were as much fun to design as they are to drive. Ford need feel the gnawing of the green-eyed monster any more. It gets to play with its off-road toys now too.
