Following the Alaska summit of the US and Russian presidents, French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday stressed the need to maintain pressure on Moscow to end its war in Ukraine.

Together with his European colleagues, Macron believes this is necessary as long as Russia's invasion of its neighbour continues and a solid and lasting peace that respects Ukraine's rights has not been achieved, Macron wrote in a post on the social media platform X.

Europeans agree that a robust peace must be accompanied by unshakeable security guarantees, he added.

"I welcome, in this regard, the readiness of the United States to contribute," Macron wrote.

In order to make concrete progress, there should be a new meeting of the Coalition of the Willing soon, he added. The coalition is an alliance of some 30 countries supporting Ukraine led by Britain and France.

Macron also urged that lessons be learned from the past 30 years, and "in particular from Russia's well-established tendency not to honor its own commitments."

US President Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin met in the city of Anchorage on Friday for talks they both described as productive. However, no tangible results were immediately announced.
