Despite being the second-smallest state in the United States, Delaware ranks sixth in terms of population density. So by default, a lot of areas within the state are crowded, especially on the roads.
But have you ever wondered which roads have the worst traffic?
More: These are Delaware's busiest roads. And yes, they're probably what you expected
Thanks to data from Delaware Department of Transportation, we have statistics on the state's busiest roads in 2024.
What are the busiest roads in New Castle County?
To nobody's surprise, the most crowded place to drive in the state is on I-95, which is one of the busiest routes in America.

The stretch from the I-295 ramp onto I-95 by Airport Road to just north of Churchman's Road and Christiana Mall takes the crown for the most packed road in the state. An average of 218,571 vehicles travel there each day.
That's up from 207,905 average daily vehicles in 2023.

Other crowded roads in New Castle County include a section of Route 13 that runs from the intersection of Wrangle Hill Road on Route 72 to Kirkwood St. George's Road. That route gets 106,680 average daily vehicles.
And I-295, which carries traffic over the Delaware Memorial Bridge to and from New Jersey, is also packed with an average of 98,665 daily vehicles.
What about Kent and Sussex Counties?
The roads in southern Delaware aren't as packed as they are in New Castle County, with no road exceeding 60,000 average daily vehicles, but there are still some busy areas along Route 1.
In Kent County, Route 1 near Smyrna is the most crowded road, averaging 55,808 daily vehicles. Bay Road past Dover is also a popular area with 48,729 average daily vehicles.

Also on Route 1 north of Rehoboth Beach is the busiest road, with 54,683 average daily vehicles. The busiest location outside of the Rehoboth area is Route 13 out of Millsboro, which has 33,052 average daily vehicles.
