A gunman opened fire inside a high-rise office building in Midtown Manhattan July 28, killing a New York City police officer and three civilians before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.
The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. at a building on Park Avenue that houses the NFL’s headquarters. The motive for the attack remains unclear, but officials familiar with the investigation told NBC News that the suspect left behind a note referencing his mental health struggles.
Who are the victims in the NYC shooting?
The NYPD identified the slain officer as Didarul Islam, 36, a father of two who was expecting his third child. Islam, who emigrated from Bangladesh, had served with the department for three and a half years and was assigned to the 47th Precinct in the Bronx.
“Officer Didarul Islam died as he lived — a hero and protector of New York City,” Mayor Eric Adams said on X. “We will never forget you.”
The names of the three civilian victims have not been released. Another person was critically injured in the attack. However, the Blackstone investment firm issued a statement saying one of its employees was among those killed, as reported by USA TODAY.
"We are heartbroken to share that our colleague, Wesley LePatner, was among those who lost their lives in the tragic incident at 345 Park Avenue," the statement said.
The alleged gunman was identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, of Nevada. Police said the motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
“This is a devastating day for our city,” Adams said. “We mourn the three other innocent lives lost this evening and are praying for the critically injured victim. It’s unthinkable these people were taken from us so randomly and senselessly.”
An NFL employee was seriously injured in the shooting, according to Commissioner Roger Goodell, as reported by ESPN.
The incident triggered a massive police response and active shooter protocols. Video from the scene showed employees evacuating the building with their hands raised as heavily armed officers secured the area.
A photo released by the NYPD shows the suspect entering the building dressed in dark clothing and sunglasses and carrying what appears to be a large firearm.
Authorities said the shooter acted alone. The investigation is ongoing.
