Walmart shoppers across Texas, you may need to check your freezer for radioactive shrimp.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a recall for Great Value brand shrimp on Tuesday, after Customs & Border Protection detected Cesium-137 in a shipment of breaded shrimp. The shrimp was processed by Indonesian company PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, doing business as BMS Foods, according to the recall.

The affected products are two-pound bags of Great Value Frozen Raw Ez Peel Tail-On Farm-Raised White Vannamei Shrimp with a best by date of March 15, 2027 (3/15/2027). The lot codes are:

  • Lot code: 8005540-1.

  • Lot code: 8005538-1.

  • Lot code: 8005539-1.

"To date, FDA has learned that Walmart has received implicated raw frozen shrimp, imported after the date of first detection of Cs-137 by CBP, but from shipments that did not alert for Cs-137," the recall notice stated.

The FDA issued the recall for stores across 13 states, including Texas and Oklahoma. People and distributors should dispose of the products. Complaints and reports of adverse reactions can be sent through the  FDA's Industry and Consumer Assistance portal.

Additional information led the FDA to find PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati violated the Federal Food, Drug, & Cosmetic act by handling the product under insanitary conditions, according to the release. The company is now under a new import alert, stopping its products from entering the U.S. until conditions are resolved, according to the notice.

What is Cesium-137 and how radioactive is it?

This is a human-made radioisotope of cesium created by nuclear fission. It is widespread around the world, so much so that trace amounts can be found in the soil, food and air. In the U.S., it is used in medical devices and measurement gauges.

While Cesium-137 can be found in trace amounts, the shrimp had an amount that could cause health concerns. Cesium-137 exposure can cause burns, acute radiation sickness, cancer and death.
