NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — In 2023, approximately 18 million households in the U.S. were food insecure at some point, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This means millions of Americans did not have access to sufficient food of adequate quality to meet basic needs.
However, a group of law enforcement officers from Middle Tennessee recently returned from a boar hunting trip in Texas to help remedy this problem.

The group, which includes active and retired officers, reportedly killed almost two dozen hogs. Then, the officers paid to process 1,500 pounds of hog meat that was delivered to local butchers and finally distributed to families in need.
Jack Byrd, CEO of a Tennessee-based security company, went on the trip with seven other men who represent the Metro Nashville Police Department, Sumner County Police Department and Monterey Police Department.
The men went to a remote location near San Antonio, where the landscape is reportedly run by hundreds of boars, some of which, Byrd says, are 400 pounds.
“They can get up to 400 pounds, they have long tusks, they are known to carry rabies and other bacteria,” Byrd told News 2. “They’ll charge; they can bite; they root; they’ll hit you with their tusks. They pose a pretty significant risk to livestock.”
According to Byrd, the trip was a chance for the officers to unwind, but also a chance to give back.
“It’s something we do every year,” he added. “It’s a good cause, good training, good time, good fellowship for the guys to go down and take a break, but it’s also a chance to give back as part of the Hunters for the Hungry program, where we pay a processing fee for everything we harvest and they donate all that to needy families.”

The hogs are reportedly excellent sources of meat for the families who receive it.
“It’s bacon. It’s ham. It’s pork products,” said Byrd. “So, we ended up getting 1,500 pounds of harvestable meat.”
Fifteen families, who were chosen from the program, each received approximately 100 pounds of meat from the group’s hunting efforts, according to Byrd.
