Can-Am Raises The Stakes With New Defender, Outlander originally appeared on Autoblog.
Can-Am reinforces its reputation for innovation
With more than 80 years in the business of powersports, Can-Am is a leader in the world of off-road innovation and boasts a portfolio of well-known models. The Defender and Outlander see some major changes as we head into the 2026 model year, and, as expected, Can-Am doesn’t disappoint. While the Defender ventures into a new generation chock full of upgrades, including best-in-class performance, the Outlander breaks ground with some industry firsts of its own.

Next-gen Defender comes engineered for versatility
A model known for its work-and-play utility, the Can-Am Defender is the workhorse behind farmers, ranchers, and builders around the globe. The next-generation model raises the bar for competitors, with a best-in-class powertrain and industry-leading technology. Not only that, but the Defender comes in six distinct models designed to handle everything from managing farmland to hitting the trails.

Powering the new Defender is an inline three-cylinder engine mated to a CVT and pDrive primary clutch, producing 95 horsepower and 70 lb-ft of torque. The new powertrain boasts improved low-speed power delivery and three drive modes - Normal, Work, and Sport - that optimize the Defender for best-in-class towing and payload capacities, as well as traversing rough terrain. An 11.9-gallon fuel tank proves to be the cherry on top, allowing for longer workdays with less time spent refueling.
With a best-in-class powertrain comes a suspension that’s just as capable. The suspension and steering components are assembled with double-bonded bushings, an industry first, that require less maintenance and reduce noise. The Defender offers up to 15 inches of ground clearance and a tighter turn radius as well.

The 2026 Can-Am Defender continues to raise the bar, with comfort and technology designed for the modern outdoor warrior. The Limited and Lone Star models now feature an updated HVAC system, complete with a simple three-knob climate control adjustment system. A 10.25-inch touchscreen display features a backup camera, built-in GPS system, and access to other apps, as well as Wi-Fi connectivity.
The all-new Defender comes stocked with an updated charging system capable of producing double that of the previous model, up to 1,700 Watts. The UTV also features new LED headlights, taillights, and backup lights that offer improved visibility.

“At Can-Am, we know that the clock never stops for the farmers, ranchers and builders around the world,” said Julie Tourville, Director, Global Marketing, Can-Am Off-Road at BRP. “This new Defender platform is built to prove it and match the unstoppable spirit of our hardworking customers.
The new Can-Am Defender comes in six configurations: XT, XT CAB, X mr, Limited, Lone Star, and Lone Star CAB. All models, except for the Lone Star, come with seating for up to three passengers, with the option to upgrade to the six-seat MAX variation. Notably, the Defender, HD7, HD9, and HD10 models remain available for 2026.

Can-Am Outlander Electric boasts up to 50 miles of range
Can-Am is on the leading edge of the powersports industry, and to prove it, they’re taking electrification off-road. The new Can-Am Outlander Electric comes powered by the same in-house electrification system that powers parent company BRP’s other powersport products, including electric motorcycles and snowmobiles.

The Outlander Electric boasts a system capable of putting out 47 horsepower and 53 lb-ft of torque while offering up to 50 miles of range. Like electric cars, the electrified ATV boasts instant throttle response. It can also charge from 20% to 80% in 50 minutes when connected to a level 2 charger. Naturally, the electrified powertrain operates quietly. It works in conjunction with noise-reducing tires, an optimized suspension, and cooling system. It can also tow an impressive 1,830 lbs., the highest in the industry.
Electrification isn’t the only major innovation on the Outlander’s menu, though. The Outlander XT-P and MAX Limited both get an industry-first semi-active suspension system. This suspension technology adjusts the compression and rebound settings according to the terrain to provide improved ride comfort and handling.

Can-Am Maverick delivers off-road prowess
Can-Am first introduced the Maverick R back in 2024, and it came with an astounding 240 horsepower. Now, the powersports innovator is pushing limits with the 2026 Maverick R X rc. The rock-crawling model utilizes experience and knowledge gained from Can-Am’s success at the 2025 King of Hammers, where they took home first place in the 4400 Unlimited class race with a modified Maverick R.
The new package optimizes the model’s rock-crawling capabilities, with an extra low gear range and ROCK mode for the differential. Other notable features include industry-first 35-inch XPS Hammer King tires, a heavy-duty skid plate, rock sliders, and an anti-intrusion bar.

The Can-Am Maverick X3 also receives a few interesting updates, most of which further refine the rider experience. Modernized LED lighting increases visibility on trails, and certain models now come equipped with 10.25-inch touchscreen displays with built-in GPS and Group Ride systems. A new X3 X Turbo package adds several features designed for the roughest of trails. It includes a 4,500-lb. winch, front bumper, full roof, and half-door inserts.

Final thoughts
Given Can-Am’s reputation in the powersports industry, it’s no surprise they’re taking innovation to new heights. By raising the bar for competitors, the powersports company provides riders with a safer and more refined experience, whether on the job or rock crawling. I’m not a huge fan of ATVs and UTVs. While anecdotal, living in Ohio, I’ve had some experience with Can-Am products, and each one has been top-notch, with plenty of power and a reasonably comfortable ride.
