Auction house posts 19% sales gain as a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spider Competizione brings $25.3M, leading multiple records.
Gooding Christie’s capped Monterey Car Week with one of its strongest performances to date, racking up more than $128 million in sales over two nights and resetting the record book with a headline $25,305,000 result for a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider Competizione.
The competition-bred California Spider became the most valuable Ferrari 250 GT California Spider ever sold at auction and the priciest car hammered by Gooding Christie’s, helping lift the company’s total up 19% from a year ago. Across the 21st annual Pebble Beach Auctions, the firm sold 153 lots for an 85% sell-through rate; 27 lots surpassed $1 million. The average price per lot climbed 17% to $847,262 compared with 2024, buoyed by a larger slate of blue-chip consignments.
Ferrari dominated the leaderboard, taking six of the top 10 slots. In addition to the record-setting Competizione car, a Nocciola-over-Tobacco 1961 250 GT SWB California Spider brought $7,550,000, while the 1957 250 GT LWB California Spider Prototipo—the first of its kind—realized $7,265,000. A race-proven 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Competizione Series III achieved $8,145,000, establishing a new auction record for the model. The company also crossed a milestone for Maranello’s mid-engine icon, selling a 1974 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS “Chairs and Flares” for $1,028,000—its first Dino to clear seven figures.
Modern exotics and motorsport machinery traded strongly. A time-capsule 1990 Ferrari F40 sold for $3,800,000; a 1994 Bugatti EB110 Super Sport made $2,755,000; and a Coca-Cola–liveried 2017 Porsche 911 RSR-17 realized $2,260,000. Continuing its run of high RUF results, Gooding Christie’s sold the first CTR Anniversary to appear at auction for $3,140,000.
Prewar and classic staples also drew deep bidding. An 1898 Panhard-Levassor M4E ‘Course’ four-seater set a world auction record for the marque at $1,380,000. The Pebble Beach class-winning 1929 Bentley Speed Six Saoutchik Drophead Coupe sold for $2,150,000. Mercedes-Benz 300 SLs went three-for-three: a late 1963 Roadster at $2,150,000, an unrestored 1956 Gullwing at $1,572,500, and a 1957 Roadster at $1,545,000. Other standouts included a 1952 Jaguar C-Type at $3,635,000 and a 1961 Aston Martin DB4 GT at $3,195,000.
Select consignments from noted collections added star power. From filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola’s garage, a 1948 Tucker 48 sold for $1,545,000, accompanied by a magnum of Inglenook Rubicon and a private tour invitation to the family’s Napa estate. A no-reserve 2005 Porsche Carrera GT from the Bethel Collection brought $1,655,000. The Touring-bodied 1950 Ferrari 166 MM/195 S Berlinetta Le Mans, delivered new to Briggs Cunningham, sold immediately after the auction for an undisclosed sum.
Gooding Christie’s said bidder registration reached a new high, up more than 20% from its 2024 Monterey sale. More than 16,000 viewers watched live on the company’s YouTube channel, with additional audiences tuning in via Hagerty’s FAST channels on Samsung TV Plus, Tubi, Amazon Fire TV and Alexa devices.
The auction followed Sunday’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where a 1924 Hispano-Suiza H6C Nieuport-Astra Torpedo owned by Penny and Lee Anderson Sr. claimed Best of Show. Organizers said this year’s Concours has already raised more than $4 million for charity, bringing lifetime giving beyond $45 million to support nearly 100 Monterey County nonprofits focused on youth education.
