Brent Hinds, who was co-founder of the rock band Mastodon, has been killed in a car crash in Atlanta, Georgia. He was only 51 years old. His many fans as well as former bandmates are in shock and mourning for the loss of the musician and his creative talent.

The accident happened at 11:35 last night as Hinds was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle through the city. As he went through an intersection at Memorial Drive and Boulevard, a BMW SUV reportedly failed to yield, hitting the motorcycle and killing Hinds.
Back in 2000, Hinds along with Troy Sanders on bass, Bill Kelliher on guitar, and Brann Dailor on drums founded Mastodon in Atlanta. They went on to release eight albums, with 2017’s Emperor of Sand’s single Sultan’s Curse snagging a Grammy award.
The official Mastodon Instagram account posted a photo of Hinds along with the following statement:
“We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident. We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time.
RIP Brent.”
Hinds and Mastodon parted ways just earlier this year. While the other members characterized the split as a mutual agreement, Hinds later claimed he was pushed out, meaning he didn’t want to leave. Now he’s dead.
This tragic accident highlights the need for drivers to watch for motorcyclists and for riders to remain hypervigilant while on their bikes, assuming drivers don’t see them.
