According to the complaint filed by prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office from the Eastern District of Missouri, the thefts spanned from May 2023 through April 2025.

Prosecutors allege Barton and a co-conspirator stole $50,000, and some of the funds came from schools. Those schools, according to court records, planned to use the money for causes related to children facing poverty and the Special Olympics.

In the indictment, it says that schools in Lewistown, Brookfield, Shelbyville, and Adair County were targeted. The school in Brookfield had more than $13,000 stolen.

Barton allegedly carried out the burglaries during the night to avoid being caught.
