Midwest grocery giant Meijer is in the midst of intense criticism and controversy over the arrest of an employee at one of its Ohio stores.
In recent days, a police bodycam video surfaced on social media of police being called to the Meijer store in Seven Hills, Ohio, more than a year ago. The police were called for an alleged employee theft charge. It was there, in a store office, according to the bodycam footage, where the employee in the presence of store leadership was arrested for allegedly stealing $110 worth of food, including chicken and fruit cups, for several months during working hours.
In the 11-minute video, the employee tells the police officer he took food a few times when he didn't have his wallet and forgot to pay it back or didn't know who to talk to about it.
Meijer issued two statements on its Facebook page on Wednesday, Aug. 20. One statement acknowledged the video circulating online, stating that it “only shows a snippet of the full story, which is understandably leading to a lot of misinformation.”
Meijer, in the statement, said the team member “knowingly committed multiple thefts over the course of multiple months,” and that’s why the police were brought in.
In another statement, Meijer stated the situation “should have been handled differently.” The statement went on to say that Meijer, which is a privately held company based in Grand Rapids, has “implemented a new procedure to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
There have been nearly 8,000 comments on the post, many expressing outrage.
The Seven Hills Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment or confirmation.
