GRANTS, N.M. (KRQE) — Two new fires started this week in the Mt. Taylor Ranger District of Grants. They’re both about three to three-and-a-half acres as of Friday, Aug. 22.

Rocky Side Fire

  • Date: Aug. 20, 11 p.m.

  • Location: West of McGaffey, smoke may be visible to the surrounding area of the Gallup.

  • Containment: N/A

  • Size: 3.5 acres

  • Structures Threatened: N/A

  • Structures Burned:  N/A

  • Evacuations: No evacuations

  • Cause: Undetermined

  • Total Personnel: Three engines, two water tenders, two hand crews, and one brush truck

Prairie Dog Fire

  • Date: Aug. 21, 4 p.m.

  • Location: Southwest of Bluewater, smoke may be visible to the surrounding area of Bluewater and Thoreau

  • Containment: N/A

  • Size: 3 acres

  • Structures Threatened: N/A

  • Structures Burned:  N/A

  • Evacuations: No evacuations

  • Cause: Undetermined

  • Total Personnel: Mt. Taylor Hot Shots deployed to the fire, aerial resources supporting

  • Area Vegetation: N/A
