On Friday, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas announced on Facebook that new rules on would be implemented to install more lighting, security and enclosure for parking lots downtown that are unattached to businesses in the entertainment districts, which he said can become a center or criminal activity.
“Unfortunately, in our entertainment districts, unsecured and often-unmaintained parking lots unattached to businesses are a breeding ground for crime, including shootings, drug sales, aggressive car sideshow activities and other nuisance activities that take police resources and harm neighborhood quality of life,” Lucas said in a post.
On his Instagram Story Sunday morning Lucas added, “I regret implementation couldn’t be sooner.”
Police said that preliminary information points to there being an altercation that led to shots being fired. The people killed in this incident are the 104th and 105th homicide in Kansas City this year, compared to 101 this time last year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes officer-involved shootings.
Another person was killed a few hours earlier in a shooting at an apartment complex less than two miles from the downtown shooting.
