Delaware State University welcomes new students with new enrollment, GPA records

With the first week of classes at Delaware State University, comes a new school enrollment record.

More than 1,600 new freshman and transfer students have just begun the fall 2025 semester at Delaware's only HBCU by Aug. 25. That means the Dover institution has reported breaking its new student enrollment record in four of the last five years. But that's not the only record on their mind.

The incoming freshman class of 2029 includes hundreds of Inspire Scholars – qualifying for the university's state-fueled scholarship for Delawareans – who join the University with an average 3.57 grade point average. That new record is up from 3.49 last fall, according to Delaware State.

As President Tony Allen said in an announcement Monday, the class holds "hundreds of our best and brightest young minds" from Delaware, with only more growth to come.

Last fall, the university ranked among the top Historically Black Colleges and Universities ranked by U.S. News and World Report, at the No. 3 public and No. 9 among all HBCUs. Such rankings follow Delaware State's continued growth over the last decade, as well as growth in its research portfolio. New rankings will likely drop soon.

For now: "To our new freshmen and transfer students, welcome to Hornet Nation!”
