KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Local and state leaders are responding to the death of a Kansas City, Kansas, police officer killed in the line of duty Tuesday.
KCK officer Hunter Simoncic was hit while trying to stop a car involved in a chase and was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The suspect who was driving the car has been arrested.

Simoncic was 26 years old and graduated from the Kansas City, Kansas Police Academy in 2023. He was from Galesburg, Kansas.
Many local leaders are extending their condolences:
U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, R-Kan., posted on X:
“We are We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of KC Officer Hunter Simoncic. At just 26 years old, Officer Simoncic was tragically killed while protecting our community. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and the entire Kansas City community as they grieve this profound loss. May he rest in peace.”
“I’m heartbroken to hear about the Kansas City Police Officer lost in the line of duty this morning,” Kansas 2nd District Congresswoman Sharice Davids posted on X. “As we learn more over the coming days, I hope the KC community will join me in keeping his family in my thoughts.”
Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach’s Office posted on X, saying:
“Please join me in praying for the family of Officer Hunter Simoncic, who lost his life in the line of duty and for the KCK Police Department. Protecting and serving the public as a law enforcement officer is much more than passing an academy and wearing a uniform. It’s a dangerous occupation that requires men and women of character willing to put their lives on the line for others. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
During a news conference Tuesday morning, KCK Mayor Tyrone Garner said, in part:
“It’s another sad day here in Kansas City, Kansas. I feel the chief’s pain; I feel the pain of our Kansas City, Kansas, police officers. We have a lot of good police officers here. He was one of them, doing his job to keep this community safe.
“Sometimes thoughts and prayers just isn’t enough because it’s going to take a lot more than that.”
Across the state line, Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Quinton Lucas also posted on X:
“Heartbroken to learn of the passing of Officer Hunter Simoncic of the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department. My thoughts are with a community that just experienced a line of duty tragedy one month ago and all those who put their lives on the line as law enforcement in our region.”
“Today, the Kansas City, Kansas/ Wyandotte County community is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Kansas City, Kansas Police (KCKPD) Officer Hunter Simoncic,” the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City (UG), Kansas said on Facebook.
“Our prayers, thoughts, and heartfelt condolences are with Officer Simoncic’s family, friends, the entire Kansas City Kansas Police Department – KCKPD and all public safety professionals who provide dedicated service and sacrifice to keep our communities safe.”
The UG went on to say that the official memorial fund for Officer Semoncic is set up through the Kansas City, Kansas Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #4.
Donations can be made to: KCK FOP Memorial Fund c/o Simoncic Family at any Public Safety Credit Union location. All proceeds collected will be donated directly to the family.
