Hurricane Erin has come and gone in the Caribbean and the United States’ eastern seaboard – stay tuned as it makes its way to Europe – but the lingering effects, specifically when it comes to dangerous ocean conditions, are still an ongoing threat.

In Puerto Rico, over the weekend, those perilous seas sadly resulted in three casualties. Additionally, on the very same day (Sunday), four surfers found themselves caught in a rip tide, struggling for their lives, but luckily, they made it out okay.

According to forecasters, the waves at the time of the tragedies were 15 feet.

"Sunday was a very sad and difficult day for emergency responders and the people in Puerto Rico due to the hazardous sea-state and coastal conditions which resulted in three fatalities during the weekend," Commander of U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Juan Capt. Luis J. Rodríguez said in a statement. "Our most heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends and loved ones of the victims, we pray they find strength during this difficult time. We caution the public that dangerous maritime, sea-state and hazardous rip current conditions continue to affect the northern and southern coasts of Puerto Rico."

As for the surfers, they were in Manatí, just east of San Juan, when they got stuck battling a vicious rip tide and large seas. Per press release: "Despite struggling with on-scene conditions, all four surfers reportedly made it out of the water safely.”

Per the US National Weather Service of Puerto Rico, regarding the dangerous conditions:

“Do not become a victim, we urge people to pay attention to warnings of the National Weather Service in San Juan, Puerto Rico, about strong tide, dangerous offshore currents and warnings for small vessels that are in effect until Tuesday, as well as signs of warning placed on the beaches.”

Stay safe, and stay tuned as Erin continues its track towards Europe.
