At the start of 2025, the price of eggs was a major concern for consumers with prices averaging near $4 per dozen, and something that President Donald Trump said he would lower.
In the first quarter of the year egg prices were largely influenced by a breakout of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, causing prices to stay high. The outbreak was forcing a shortage of eggs as well, leading some grocers to restrict how many dozens of eggs consumers could buy per visit.
By May, egg prices had started to drop. Despite the notable price reduction, egg prices nationwide remained almost 69% more expensive than they were in May 2024, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.
Nationally, egg prices have continued to trend downward, with July posting an average price of $3.59 for one dozen grade A large eggs, marking the lowest average price of eggs since November 2024. August egg price data is expected to be released in mid-September.
