
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Louisiana ranks as the second state with the highest expected loss from hurricanes.
A study conducted by Lending Tree shows the top 10 states with the highest expected annual losses per 10,000 residents from hurricanes and tropical cyclones.
Tropical cyclones are one of the most destructive natural disasters that account for the majority of billion-dollar disaster costs and deaths.
Analysts at Lending Tree discovered that since 2000, tropical cyclones have accounted for 70% of disaster costs across the nation.
Hurricane Katrina was one of the most expensive storms in the analysis, costing $201.3 billion. Storms that struck Louisiana, such as Hurricane Ida, Hurricane Andrew, and Hurricane Ike, are also on the list of expensive storms.
Louisiana ranks second, behind Florida, with the highest annual losses per 10,000 residents. The state costs $3.1 million per 10,000 residents.
