The NFL is reportedly seeking a six-game suspension for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice after he was involved in a 2024 car crash, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The league is reportedly looking for that suspension to kick in at the start of the 2025 NFL season.
Rice was reportedly driving 119 mph while racing another car during a multi-vehicle crash in 2024. He was arrested and able to post bond. Injuries were reported, though there were no deaths as a result of the crash.
The NFL waited until Rice's legal situation concluded before considering a suspension. Rice pleaded guilty to two felony charges related to the crash in July, opening the door for the NFL to render its own judgement. The NFL reportedly sought a longer suspension for Rice initially, with reports suggesting the league wanted him to miss double-digit games.
In August, it was reported that Rice's disciplinary hearing would take place Sept. 30, potentially allowing him to play in the Chiefs' first four games before a potential suspension kicked in. It's unclear whether that hearing got moved, or if the NFL is looking to fast track the suspension ahead of the regular season. Rice reportedly received clearance to travel to Brazil for the team's Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, which caused some to believe he would be available to play in the contest.
After a promising rookie season, Rice was limited to just four games last year after sustaining a knee injury while trying to make a tackle after a Patrick Mahomes interception. Prior to the injury, Rice emerged as Mahomes' go-to target. In those four games, Rice hauled in 24 catches for 288 yards and two scores. Rice is expected to be Mahomes' top target in 2025 when the wideout is able to play in games.
