President Trump’s approval rating has gone up by 5 points in the past month, with more than half of the public approving of his handling of crime amid the administration’s federal takeover of Washington’s police force, according to a new poll.
The latest survey from The Associated Press/NORC, released Wednesday, found that 45 percent of surveyed Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the job since returning to office in January — a 5-point increase since the same poll was taken in July.
The president has seen an uptick in approval from respondents regarding the economy, with 43 percent of respondents giving positive feedback, a 5-point bump since last month, when it was at 38 percent. About 6 in 10 U.S. adults said the economy is still in a poor condition.
A Gallup survey released this week found that Trump’s approval rating was at 40 percent, 3 percentage points higher than it was last month.
Trump’s handling of foreign policy was at 39 percent, a new low point during his second term, according to the Gallup pollsters. The same survey found respondents’ approval of his economic agenda fell to around 37 percent.
Around 53 percent of surveyed Americans approve of Trump’s handling of crime, the numbers show.
Overall, two-thirds of respondents said that crime is a major problem in the country, and about 8 in 10 said it is a major problem in large cities. Around 1 in 5 Americans said crime is a major issue in rural areas or small towns, or where they live, according to the survey.
More than half of surveyed Americans, 55 percent, said it is acceptable for the U.S. military and National Guard troops to aid local law enforcement in major cities. About a third of respondents are supportive of the federal government taking control of police departments in large cities, the survey found.
The majority of GOP voters, 82 percent, find it at least “somewhat acceptable” for the federal government to use the National Guard and military to help out local police. Just more than half, 51 percent, of surveyed Republicans said it is acceptable for the federal government to take control of a city’s police department, according to the poll.
The majority of Democratic respondents in the survey were against the government deploying National Guard troops and the military to help local law enforcement and do not approve federalization of local law enforcement.
The AP/NORC poll was conducted Aug. 21-25 among 1,182 adults. The margin of error was 3.8 percentage points.
