Since President Donald Trump’s inauguration through to July 29, U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement has arrested 343 undocumented immigrants in Rhode Island, according to data from the Deportation Data Project.
That’s almost 100 more arrests than were made by June 10, when a New York Times analysis of data obtained by the Deportation Data Project from the University of California, Berkeley showed that the daily arrest rate in Rhode Island had increased by 182%.
The arrests are part of Trump's effort to carry out the largest mass deportations effort in history, where he has promised to target those with criminal records. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has repeatedly highlighted arrests of convicted criminals, saying they are arresting the “worst of the worst.”
In Rhode Island, 127 of those arrested this year so far were convicted criminals. 147 had at least one criminal charge, and 69 had no criminal charges or convictions.
Here’s what to know about ICE arrests in Rhode Island, according to a USA TODAY analysis of government data provided by ICE in response to a FOIA request to the Deportation Data Project.
How many of those arrested by ICE in Rhode Island have been convicted of crimes?
USA TODAY compared ICE arrest data from Jan. 20 – July 31, 2024 against Jan. 20 – July 29, 2025 (the last available data set) to determine the change in number and percent of arrested immigrants categorized into three criminal statuses.
From Jan. 20 to July 31, 2024, nearly 39% of those arrested by ICE in Rhode Island were “convicted criminals,” meaning they have at least one criminal conviction. About 20% had “pending criminal charges,” meaning they had no convictions but at least one criminal charge. Almost 41% were “other immigration violators,” which means they have no charges or convictions.
While the number of arrests in all categories rose in 2025, the percentages of each category changed.
After Trump took office up until July 29 in 2025, the percentage of convicted criminals arrested by ICE fell slightly, to 37% (even though the total number of convicted criminals arrested rose). The percentage of people who had not been charged or convicted also fell, to 20%. Those with pending criminal charges rose, to almost 43%.
Year | Convicted Criminal | Pending Criminal Charges | Other Immigration Violator | Total Arrests | Convicted Criminal Percent | Pending Criminal Charges Percent | Other Immigration Violator Percent |
2024 | 56 | 29 | 59 | 144 | 39% | 20% | 41% |
2025 | 127 | 147 | 69 | 343 | 37% | 43% | 20% |
Arrests of non-criminals up elsewhere, but not RI
While Trump has pledged to get rid of dangerous criminals, higher arrests of those without criminal records is being seen nationwide.
According to Reuters, ICE detention statistics show the number of detainees arrested by ICE with no other criminal charges or convictions rose from about 860 in January to 7,800 in June – a more than 800% increase. Those arrested and detained with criminal charges or convictions also rose, but at a lower rate of 91%.
In New England states like Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, the data shows that the percentage of arrests of noncriminals has increased and the percentage of arrests of convicted criminals has decreased.
However, this trend is not seen in the Rhode Island data. While the percentage of convicted criminals has fallen slightly, the percentage of those without charges or convictions has been cut in half.

Those New England states also saw an increase in the percent of those arrested with at least one criminal charge, and that is true for Rhode Island as well.
Who is being arrested by ICE in Rhode Island?
According to the data, 88% of those arrested in Rhode Island this year were male and 12% were female.
Almost 43% of those arrested were Guatemalan, 14% were from the Dominican Republic and nearly 7% from Brazil.
Their median age was 36.
Ten of those arrested were 18 or under. The youngest person arrested was born in 2022, and the oldest in 1949.
