SPRINGFIELD — A Western Massachusetts woman who gained notoriety for attacking sheriff’s deputies with a cloud of honey bees and then skipped her own trial is fighting extradition from a Tennessee jail.
Rebecca “Rorie” Susan Woods is refusing to waive extradition proceedings to be returned to Massachusetts to face a judge after going on the lam on the day of her trial in Springfield District Court, a spokesperson for Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni said.
Prosecutors and a judge gave Woods hours to appear to represent herself on Aug. 5. When she failed to show up, the judge issued an arrest warrant.
Two days later, she was found at a motel in Tennessee and taken into custody, according to authorities. Gulluni’s office has requested a governor’s warrant, according to spokesperson Payton North.
Prosecutors are required to submit applications to the governor’s office for such a warrant. If the governor agrees, fugitives will be extradited back to their home states or where their alleged crimes occurred.
North said no additional court dates are yet scheduled.
