KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Independence Avenue is closed in both directions after the roof of a building collapsed Thursday afternoon in Kansas City.

According to the Kansas City Fire Department, just before 12:30 p.m., crews were called to the area of Independence Avenue and Brighton Avenue on reports of a partial building collapse.

When KCFD arrived, they reported finding a “bowing truss roof” that had collapsed into the inside of the building, causing several walls to lean outward.

A collapse zone was later created, and KCFD called Dangerous Buildings to the scene.

Investigations reveal the building was being used as a storage location for a wholesale business.

The owner and renter of the building were called to the scene and are now working with Dangerous Buildings and City Planning to develop a plan to secure the building.

Nobody was injured in the collapse, and KCFD said Independence Avenue is currently closed in both directions from Chelsea to Brighton Avenues.
