Connecticut is one of the hardest state names for Americans to spell, according to a recent study.

An analysis by language learning website Preply found that Connecticut was the third hardest state name for Americans to spell correctly. It was also the sixth hardest state name to pronounce.

"Connecticut’s silent second 'c' leads people into spelling it 'Connet-icut,'" the site said. "The state’s name comes from the Mohegan-Pequot word quinetucket, meaning 'long tidal river.'"

Preply compiled a state-by-state list in June of the state names and individual town names across the country that Americans find the trickiest to spell and pronounce by analyzing total search volumes from the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia and globally for pronunciation and spelling queries of each of the 50 states. They also used Google Trends and Google Keyword for deeper regional patterns.
