The 318 area code is located in northern Louisiana and encompasses a large geographic area, including cities like Shreveport, Bossier City, Monroe, Ruston and Alexandria.
This area code also includes numerous parishes, including Caddo, Bossier, Ouachita, Rapides, Natchitoches and more.
Beginning in September, a new dialing procedure, as well as a new area code overlay, are to be implemented.
10-digit dialing to become mandatory for all local calls within the 318 area code
Starting on Aug. 25, all local calls made within the 318 area code, as well as the new overlay area, will require 10-digit dialing, meaning the area code must be dialed along with a seven-digit number.
Starting Aug. 25, if only seven digits are dialed, calls won't be completed, and a recording will instruct callers to hang up and dial again, using the area code.
New area code overlay for same region as 318
Starting on Sept. 25, a new area code, 457, will be introduced as an overlay of the same region as 318, meaning that some phone numbers in the region will be assigned the 457 area code.
The 457 area code will be assigned to new phone numbers within the northern region of Louisiana, while existing 318 numbers will remain unchanged. Ten-digit dialing will also be mandatory for 457 area codes.
