Thunderstorms and heavy rain knocked out power to 12,000 households statewide during the afternoon of July 31.

As of 4:30 p.m., PSE&G's outage map was reporting 6,719 customers. The hardest hit counties were:

  • Essex County: 1,629 (Bloomfield - 832)

  • Middlesex County: 2,070 (Woodbridge - 1,731)

  • Bergen County: 1,223 (Wallington - 745)

JCP&L was reporting 5,373 people without power with Morris County by far the most with 2,222 customers with no power as of 4:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Orange & Rockland had no outages in New Jersey.

Earlier in the day, Acting Gov. Tahesha Way declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm hitting the region.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for most of the state until 8 p.m., and a flood watch for all of New Jersey and the surrounding region for July 31 to Aug. 1.
