LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A driver accused of causing two crashes that left a trail of damage, including one man critically injured and an hours-long power outage in the west Las Vegas valley, is facing several charges.
Roberto Olivas, 27, is facing charges for DUI, reckless driving resulting in substantial bodily injury, no proof of insurance, and driving an expired, unregistered vehicle, according to records.
Olivas was involved in a hit-and-run crash on Thursday afternoon with a Maserati at Rampart Boulevard and Vegas Drive and fled the scene, reaching speeds up to 99 mph, nearly three times over the posted speed limit, and caused a second crash at the intersection of Buffalo and Vegas drives, according to the arrest report.
In an attempt to go around traffic stopped at the intersection, Olivas used a turn lane, but hit a curb and lost control. His large pickup truck careened onto the sidewalk, hitting a fire hydrant, an electrical box, a light pole, a water utility box, and then a bus shelter with a man inside, before overturning and sliding to a stop, the report stated.
The 61-year-old man inside the bus shelter suffered critical injuries, including a brain bleed, fractured jaw, torn lung, broken ribs, and a broken leg, police said. He was taken to the University Medical Center.

Olivas, who also suffered some injuries, including a possible fractured neck, told police that he was at the Suncoast Casino before the crashes. He admitted to consuming something, but it was redacted in the arrest report. Blood samples were collected as evidence. Those results will be available at a later time.
According to Crash Data Retrieval (CDR), collected from Olivas’ pickup, police said Olivas was traveling at 99 mph, slowing to 81 mph one second before impact, but then accelerating to 98 mph less than half a second before impact.
This is his second time facing similar charges. Records show he was arrested in 2017 for DUI, speeding, and an open container of alcohol. He pleaded guilty to the DUI, and the other charges were dismissed.
The crash caused a power outage that impacted 3,500 residents in that area. The power was restored to most NV Energy customers about three hours later.
Olivas is due to appear in court on Aug. 1.
