Not So Fast: Legal Action Stops Rick Ware Racing NASCAR Team Sale

The sale of Rick Ware Racing to TJ Puchyr has been stopped thanks to Legacy Motor Club taking legal action. On July 31, a judge in North Carolina issued a temporary restraining order stopping Rick Ware Racing from going ahead with the sale of the NASCAR team, and now everything is up in the air.

Guy takes his three-wheeled Can Am Spyder into a skatepark and chaos ensues.

It’s a complicated situation with a lot of accusations and legal positioning. Basically what it boils down to is Legacy, which is owned by Jimmie Johnson, feels it’s been stiffed after Puchyr set a deal to buy one of Ware’s team charters.

There’s a disagreement over which of the two charters Ware agreed to sell and if possession takes place for the 2026 or 2027 season. One charter is used by RWR and the other is leased to RFK Racing.

According to the AP, Ware had already agreed with RFK to swap the charters and lease the one RWR has been using in 2026. Supposedly, he was then going to fully sell a charter to Legacy in 2027.

Legacy says Ware is lying about the arrangement, not only to it but also to the court.

For now, the deal is on ice as the judge issued a temporary restraining order for 10 days. Legacy is petitioning for a preliminary injunction.

There are plenty of accusations flying around, especially from the attorneys hired by the parties. It’s not clear if a deal will be reached as Ware said while court proceedings continue, he won’t do anything.

A trial has been scheduled in January 2026, but it’s possible the parties will settle out of court before then.

In the meantime, Legacy has filed suit against Puchyr, saying he interfered with the Ware deal, causing financial damages. In other words, it’s all a huge mess that could affect the team lineup for NASCAR in 2026 or 2027.
