An annual, spooky transformation is seemingly underway across California as Spirit Halloween readies for another season in your city’s former Rite Aid, Party City, Big Lots — basically any space once used by a major retailer.
The popular, seasonal costume and decor retailer announced on Wednesday, July 30 that their online store locator was live for this year, helping give fans early insights into where, and when, Spirit Halloween will open near them across the state.
At least three Spirit Halloween stores in California were open as of Aug. 2 of last year.
It comes as Spirit Halloween celebrated their virtual grand opening on Friday, Aug. 1, showing off on their social media just some of what will be available for sale this year, including costumes from popular shows and games like “Squid Game” and “Fortnite.”
What day does Spirit Halloween open? What we know
Spirit Halloween didn’t immediately return the Desert Sun’s inquiry on what date stores will open in California, but their 2025 online store locator shows that some stores say "opens August," while others say they are “coming soon." And at least one location read "opens September," too.

Spirit Halloween announced in late June 50,000 positions available to support their nationwide stores. People interested in a position can visit Work4Spirit.com or can text "Reaper" to 85000 to apply, according to a news release.
