A New Jersey man died while scuba diving off the coast of Massachusetts last week, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
New Millstone Township resident Joseph Mazraani, 48, died on July 29, the district attorney’s office said.
On that day, Mazraani was part of a group of scuba divers on a boat called the “Tenacious” — a 45-foot vessel that he owned, the district attorney’s office said. The group of divers was about 150 miles east of Cape Cod, scuba diving and exploring shipwrecks in George’s Bank, when at some point, Mazraani experienced a medical emergency.
Other members of the group pulled Mazraani from the water and tried lifesaving measures but were unable to revive him, the district attorney’s office said. The U.S. Coast Guard and New Bedford police were notified, and the boat began its return to port in New Bedford.
The vessel arrived at the Fleet Marina in New Bedford at approximately 6 a.m. on July 30, the district attorney’s office said. Investigators spoke with those on board, and the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office took custody of Mazraani.
Foul play is not suspected in Mazraani’s death. The Coast Guard, the Bristol County District Attorney’s office and New Bedford police are investigating.
