
FAYETTE COUNTY, Ill. – First responders in Fayette County recovered the body of a nine-year-old girl Sunday morning after she disappeared in the Kaskaskia River the day prior.
According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, the drowning happened around 2:30 p.m. Saturday near the Wren Bridge area, approximately 17 miles northeast of Vandalia.
The sheriff’s office learned a girl had been swept underneath logs and other debris in the river and became trapped.

Neighboring emergency responders and volunteers turned up to assist in the search.
Around 3 a.m., the decision was made to call off the rescue and recovery operation until the morning.
The search resumed at 8 a.m. The sheriff’s office said the nine-year-old was located and extricated just before 11:10 a.m.
The young girl’s name has not been released.
