DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — On Sunday, Aug. 4, 2019, hundreds of people were in the Oregon District for a typical night out.
The early morning hours soon turned tragic.
Monday marks six years since a mass shooting in the historic Dayton neighborhood that left nine people dead and dozens injured.

Despite the sorrow, the community has grown together in the time since, through vigils, The Seed of Life Memorial, murals and more.
Dion Greene is just one person who was impacted by the deadly shooting.
His father Derrick Fudge was killed that night. The loss led him to establish the Fudge Foundation and also fortified a passion for advocacy.
“Just being there, being a voice, being a resource and just also helping those that have been impacted on what it looks like later down the road,” Greene said.
Greene is working to build the Fudge Foundation Resource Center, which would house mentorship programs, social services, workforce development, community outreach and advocacy opportunities. The center is a collaboration between Greene and Job Core.
Greene hopes to partner with Miami Valley organizations to make the space one ran by the community for the community.

Despite these efforts, the weight of the anniversary remains heavy.
“I’m standing here strong. You might not see it on my face, but I can feel it inside. I’m slowly starting to drain, you know, just on the mental exhaustion,” Greene said. “I was there that night, too, as well. So, you know, I have a lot of survivor guilt as well.”
“All those family members, should still have their loved ones at home present, laughing and smiling.”
