Texas Democrats who fled the state over GOP efforts to redraw congressional maps are scheduled to answer reporters’ questions with New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) on Monday.
The Texas Democrats said they were denying Republicans a quorum, or the minimum number of lawmakers needed present in order to conduct legislative business, following a similar tactic they employed the last time the GOP pursued midcycle redistricting in 2003.
Many Democratic legislators traveled to Illinois as well as New York and Massachusetts, all of which are Democratic-led states, after breaking quorum. Texas Republicans have threatened arrests and fines if the state lawmakers do not return to Austin to vote on the maps.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) on Sunday night vowed to protect lawmakers who fled to his state.
