Controversial NASCAR driver Carson “Hurricane” Hocevar got into it with Zane Smith, spinning the other driver into the barrier. It happened on lap 229 at Iowa Speedway over the weekend, upsetting not only No 38 but also his crew. What’s more, Smith got into it with his crew after the incident, berating them for giving him bad directions.
Lewis Hamilton shockingly states Ferrari should fire him as a driver.
In other words, tensions were sky high. Not helping matters was later what appeared to be Smith trying to retaliate against Hocevar, which was unsuccessful.
Ultimately, Hocevar came in eighth and Smith was 36th. That result helped things boil over after the race.
Motorsports journalist Stephen Stumpf was interviewing Hocevar after the race when he said a member of 38 team crew marched over, interrupting to cuss the driver out for wrecking their car.
Some think the move was justified, believing Hocevar is a little punk who needs to be set straight. Others agree Hocevar is out of line, but think crew members have no business approaching drivers.
But some fans think the crew member should’ve gone further with Hocevar, feeling his actions toward the driver were more than justified.
Opinions about Hocevar in general vary. Some feel he’s the second coming of Dale Earnhardt, others think he’s a talentless, classless hack who will flame out. There’s even disagreement about whether his antics are helping or hurting viewership.
Speaking of controversial figures, many NASCAR fans are genuinely shocked at Bubba Wallace’s performance at the end of this weekend’s race.
At the final restart, Wallace was 32nd in the field. Yet in just 17 laps he was able to weave his way through traffic, finishing in sixth. While he wasn’t in contention for the lead at any point, it helps to prove the man’s victory at the Brickyard the previous weekend wasn’t merely a fluke.
