JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Data from the ADP National Employment Report revealed that Mississippi wage growth greatly lags behind the rest of the country.

Between July 2024 and July 2025, wage growth among those who stayed at the same job was 4.4% nationally. Their median annual pay was $60,700. In Mississippi, that number is $45,400, the lowest rate in the country. More notably, Mississippi is in a three-way tie with Virginia and Michigan for the second-lowest median wage growth in the U.S. at 3.9%. That is roughly 13% lower than the national average.

Last year, Mississippi’s median pay growth of 3.5% between June 2023 and June 2024 was the lowest nationally. That was more than 28% less growth compared to the national average of 4.9%.

The ADP report analyzed private-sector labor market information to come to its conclusion. In total, the HR platform used the payroll data of more than 25 million U.S. employees.

Across various industries nationally, ADP data indicates that pay has increased roughly at the same rate. Financial jobs had the highest year-over-year wage increase at 5.1% since July 2024. Information-related jobs had the lowest increase at 4.2%.

National data also showed that people who change jobs typically have higher earning potential than those who stay with the same employer. The average job changer had a 7% increase in their median wage over the last year. That means for every extra dollar a person who stayed at the same job made compared to the same time last year, a person who went to a new employer made $1.59. ADP data also showed that younger residents have higher wage growth potential than their older colleagues.

Despite bipartisan efforts to increase Mississippi’s minimum wage, it has been at the federal minimum of $7.25 since 2009.
