CLEVELAND (WJW) – Downtown Cleveland is gearing up to welcome thousands of journalists, media professionals and students for the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Convention, kicking off this Wednesday at the Huntington Convention Center.
This year marks a major milestone—NABJ’s 50th anniversary—and for the first time in its history, the annual event is being held in Northeast Ohio.
“Black journalists still make up less than 10% of U.S. newsrooms,” said Rhonda Crowder, president of the Greater Cleveland Association of Black Journalists.

That makes this convention not just a celebration, but a crucial space for connection, opportunity and advancement.
“Fellowship, networking, growth and job opportunities — this convention is where emerging journalists come to sharpen their skills and get advice,” said Crowder.
“We are super excited and super honored to host this 50-year celebration,” said Emily Lauer with Destination Cleveland, the city’s tourism bureau, which has been working behind the scenes for six years to bring the convention to town.

Destination Cleveland estimates the convention will generate a $3.5 million economic impact.
