Drivers in Kissimmee had to make room for an emergency merging as a small Cessna plane landed on the road among them on July 30, hitting one vehicle, officials said.
Video footage shows two people climbing out of the single-engine, four-seat plane after it came to a stop on Ham Brown Road next to Orange Blossom Trail, about 20 miles south of Orlando, at around 11:30 a.m. The Osceola County Sheriff's Office reported that the plane struck a vehicle but no injuries were reported.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, there were two people on board the Cessna 172. The FAA is investigating the landing. Local TV news station WESH reported that the Cessna belongs to Aerostar Training Services LLC, a pilot training center based at Kissimmee Gateway Airport.
Experimental plane crashes in Florida state park canal
On Aug. 4, a pilot's experimental plane crashed into the C-54 canal inside the St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park at roughly 5:40 p.m., an Indian River County Fire Rescue official said.
The pilot, who has not been identified but was described as an adult male, was found "walking down a trail a short distance from the plane crash," and had "no obvious signs of injuries," Indian River County Sheriff's Lt. Kevin Jaworski said.
Another small plane crashes in a residential area in Florida
The Kissimmee incident occurred just two days after another small plane, an Orlican M8 registered to Valiair LC Trustee in Ogden, Utah, clipped a palm tree and crashed in a residential area of Lake Worth 160 miles away, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
On the way down, the plane skimmed the roof of a 2020 Toyota Camry on Lake Osborne Drive. Seven people were sent to the hospital: the pilot, a passenger, and five people (one adult, four children) from the car, authorities said. The plane's occupants had non-life-threatening injuries and the vehicle's occupants were taken "as a precaution."
The plane's occupants were later identified as Thomas Peters, 51, of Aruba and Duncan MacLaren, 29, of Delray Beach. They received care for minor injuries at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, the sheriff's office said.
After striking the vehicle, the plane came to rest in John Prince Park just north of Palm Beach County Park Airport. The airport has no air traffic controller and primarily serves general aviation aircraft. There are several flight schools and clubs housed there.
The sheriff's office, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash.
