Millions of dollars in federal grants for schools nationwide are coming from the U.S. Department of Education after a nearly monthlong delay.
Delaware will be reaping $28 million from the release, according to a post on X from Gov. Matt Meyer.
The funding was held up by the Trump administration, which missed the usual July 1 deadline for further review. USA TODAY reported that a notice to congressional staff regarding the delay said, "Decisions have not yet been made concerning submissions and awards for this upcoming academic year."
FUNDING LIMBO: Nearly $27 million for Delaware schools in limbo as Trump administration withholds funds
Delaware's allocation was a drop in the bucket of the more than $6 billion to be spread out nationally. In response to the freeze, Delaware joined 24 other states in a lawsuit against the Trump administration on July 14.
The money will give a boost to school districts around the state, which have already seen major budget changes from statewide property tax reassessments. Students will be returning to classrooms in a few weeks, and these grants will help fund key parts of the state's education system.
The money helps generally with teacher training, student support, English language acquisition, after-school programs and migrant education.

Meyer said in his X post that he heard from U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon directly about the funding release and thanked Delaware Secretary of Education Cindy Marten and Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings for their help in securing the money.
"Given the delay and as we get ready to start a new school year, it’s critical that these funds come with no new strings attached or additional red tape," Meyer said in the post from July 25. "These dollars must go straight to the classrooms that need them most."
