Spirit Airlines is ready to take you to the island with what the company says are the first nonstop flights from Fort Lauderdale to the sunny Caribbean destinations of Belize City and Grand Cayman, according to a release Aug. 5.
The Fort Lauderdale route to Belize City, Belize will launch Nov. 21 with flights once a day on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. Introductory fares start at $85 one way.
On Dec. 4, when you're thinking about warmer weather, flights to Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands begin once a day on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Introductory fares for those start at $66 one way.
"This is a win for travelers across our network, who are gaining more access to top destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America as we continue to expand service from Fort Lauderdale," said John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning at Spirit.
The Florida-based budget airline is the largest carrier at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, the company said, and is scheduled to operate more than 100 peak day departures to more than 70 destinations by the end of 2025.
Spirit also recently announced new flights between Fort Lauderdale and Macon, Georgia and new service to Key West.
The news comes shortly after Spirit, still struggling out of bankruptcy and a failed merger with JetBlue, announced plans to furlough nearly 300 pilots later this year, effective Nov. 1.
Despite its issues, Spirit was named Best Airline for 2025 by WalletHub in April.
Recently the company has tried to market itself as the premium option among budget airlines with a new ticket lineup, an updated loyalty program, and extra legroom seating for the "Go Comfy" ticketholders (now called "Premium Economy").
What are the new Spirit flights to the Caribbean?
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) in Belize City, starting Nov. 21, nonstop flights three times weekly on Monday, Friday and Saturday
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) in Grand Cayman, starting Dec. 4, nonstop flights three times weekly on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday
More airlines making changes
Spirit wasn't the only airline to make changes this year.
Delta announced in May it was folding the base fare into its new Delta Main category (previously called Main Cabin) for flights departing Oct. 1 or later, changing Delta Comfort+ to Delta Comfort and First Class to Delta First.
United Airlines started requiring all domestic passengers to be checked in for their flights 45 minutes before departure. Previously, check in for passengers without checked bags closed half an hour before departure.
JetBlue announced the airline was teaming with Florida's passenger rail service Brightline to offer "a seamless air-and-rail booking experience for travel across Central and South Florida" by allowing JetBlue passengers to book both a plane and train trip directly on jetblue.com as part of a combined itinerary.
Southwest announced that the airline's new assigned seating policy will begin Jan. 27, 2026. Earlier this year, Southwest ended its free baggage policy and added a new Basic fare.
