Germany's impeccable network of highways known as the autobahn is what driving enthusiasts consider hallowed ground. It's famous for its exceptional road surface and the distinct lack of speed limits. Of course, not everywhere on the autobahn is a velocity free-for-all; in many places, speed limits are enforced as they would be on any other road. And one driver clocked at over 199 mph just found that out the hard way.
According to the Associated Press, German police from the Magdeburg division, around two hours west of Berlin, say they clocked a motorist traveling at over 199 mph. In some places on the autobahn, that would be legal, if still potentially questionable depending on traffic conditions. In the section in question, however the speed limit is 120 kph, or 74.5 mph — about the same as you'll see on interstates in Nebraska or New Mexico.
Magdeburg officers eventually caught up with the driver. Once stopped, police handed down some punishment: the driver received a €900 ($1043) fine, received two points on their license, and has been barred from driving for three months. Drivers in Germany face possible license suspension if they accumulate eight points on their license, so this one violation put the driver a quarter of the way there.
Police didn't provide any information on what type of car it was that the driver was in. We've reached out to local authorities to find out more information; if we hear back, we'll update you here. Regardless, the number of cars capable of exceeding 199 miles per hour is relatively few and far-between.
This is far from the first time that we've seen a wild ticket for excessive speed. Just a couple of months ago, a Porsche Panamera driver received over $2700 in fines after police claimed they saw him driving at 167 mph in a 70 mph zone. Of course, that was in California, where there are no roads without speed limits.
