Flood advisory in effect for parts of Greater Cincinnati near Ohio River

A flood advisory is in effect in the afternoon of Aug. 6 for parts of Greater Cincinnati near the Ohio River, according to the National Weather Service.

The flood advisory covers southern Hamilton County in Ohio and northern stretches of Kenton and Campbell counties in Kentucky.

Minor flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected in low-lying and poor drainage areas until 6:30 p.m., the weather service said in an alert.

At 4:06 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. So far, between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain has fallen. An additional half-inch to an inch of rain is possible, the weather service says.

Some locations that may experience flooding include: Cincinnati, Covington, Norwood, Erlanger, Fort Thomas, Newport, Edgewood, Cheviot, Fort Mitchell, Villa Hills, Highland Heights, Taylor Mill, Bellevue, Fort Wright, Dayton, Ludlow, Southgate, Crescent Springs, Crestview Hills and Park Hills.

The weather service reminds people to "turn around, don't drown" when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
